As Frankenstein gave new life to his monster, so have we given new life to the pumpkin pie. As a full moon loomed ominous behind the wispy clouds and a sycamore tree scraped against the windows, we blended pecans with dates and cinnamon to create a frighteningly nostalgic base. Once pressed into a tin, we layered over the top a mix of pumpkin powder, maple syrup, and nutmeg. As we didn’t have access to lightning strikes (for OH&S reasons), we instead baked the pies gently in our oven until the tops had turned a golden brown. At long last, the timer pinged and our pumpkin pies had risen. “It’s alive!” we shouted. Only to be reminded that they weren’t alive, they were pies, but they tasted amazing and would live long in the hearts and minds of all those lucky enough to eat them.
